Michele, on next Startup tap F8 and see if you get a Menu. If yes choose
Safe Mode. If the computer boots into Safe Mode then select Start>All
Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore.
I tried booting up in safe mode, but nothing will dsiplay on the desktop
(just a black screen). Is there any way to run the system restore without
being in windows?

I am having a similar problem. After carrying out a 'system restore' as I
had done recently, the computer has rebooted, has appeared to go through all
the usual load up screens - including the windows xp load up - and then
produces a blank screen. The mouse is functional but there is no task bar or
any icons - nothing. I carried out the system restore as usual and I have
not installed any new software since my last restore. Can anyone help?
