Windows Defender (Beta 2) homepage says definations haven't been updated for
14 days, when I check for updates I get the following message:-
"Windows Defender was unable to completethe update 0x80240016. The Device
does not recognize the command. Can anyone shed some light on the subject

Hi Paul,

I wish I could help but I have the exact same message and I don't have any
answers. I've only had WD for 2 1/2 wks and it's been nothing but problems.
I've been to Windows Update and Microsoft Update and downloaded updates for
it at least 8 times. It says they were downloaded and installed, but the
next scan shows I need the same update again. It doesn't recognize that my
computer has already been updated. And the program itself says it hasn't
been updated for 14 days! Good Luck!

I've seen this error myself, but it went away in the course of normal
updates--via WindowsUpdate.

I would do this:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=915105

Apply the resolution steps in the above KB article.

Write back if you get an error message--there's another step possible.

Once that's done, go to Windows Update and apply all offered critical
updates--you can do an express scan.

What's the next step? The RUN command does appear to delete something, but I
still get the same msg about failed update when I try to update within
defender. Thanks.

And what happened when you went to Windows Update and did an express scan?

I tried following the resolutions from the above mentioned page. When I
click start then run and type in the command given, windows cannot find it.
When I run a Windows Update scan. it tells me Definition Update 1.14.1350.3
for BETA Windows Defender (KB915597) is downloaded and ready to be installed
on my computer. When I click install, it says installation successful.
However when I vew my Update History, I see that I've successfully installed
that exact update 5 times already and WD says my definitions have not been
updated for 15 days. I've only had WD for 2 1/2 weeks, so I have not
uninstalled it and then reinstalled it. Is that what I need to do?

That's a step forward. Once Defender is updated, do you still get an error
message when attempting update within the program, via Help, about, check
for updates?

The resolution steps in

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=915105

should fix this. However, if you are getting an error in those steps, you
can try this as a next step:

Download the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility via the link in this KB
article:

http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;290301

Install it, and run it via start, all programs.

Look down the list of installed items for Windows Defender Signatures.
Highlight that item and remove it.

Then go to Windows Update, do an express scan, and install all offered
updates.

I appreciate your working with me on this, but I've made the decision to
remove WD from my computer. I'm not a computer techie and I don't have the
time to deal with this program and all it's gliches. After reading over all
the iniformation about Windows Installer CleanUp Utility, I'm not willing to
take the risk of causing more problems. So thanks anyway.

Sorry that the beta didn't work to your satisfaction. I hope that these
update problems are close to being solved--but I can't tell at this point.
