Default mail and browser

D

Dan Drewry

I asked this before about the mail program, but am now including the
browser. When I click on a link, it brings up Netscape instead of using
IE6. I've done the Tools/Internet Options/Programs thing - that doesn't
help. I've had the question come up - Do you want IE to be your default
browser? - and I answered yes. I still get Netscape.
There was a previous suggestion that the only fix for the mail problem
was to edit the registry - is that the case for the browser also? There
must be another way!

These solutions all refer to Outlook Express, even though you say to
ignore references to it. The first solution says in IE go to View |
Folder Options | File Types, etc. Under View, there is NO Folder Options.
I've specified IE as the default everywhere I know of, and Netscape 7.1
is specified as my default mail program. But still the browser and mail
programs called is Netscape 4.7.
If the only way to fix this is registry editing, I hope someone can lead
me through it in detail.

Oops - my previous reply said IE / View didn't have Folder Options. I
just noticed the instructions refer to Windows Explorer! Sorry about
that. I'll try the suggestion.

In the first suggestion, it says if all else fails, run "regsvr32
urlmon.dll". I don't know what that's supposed to do, but it didn't
help. I'm really getting frustrated over this!

Hi Dan,

1. Open Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) and navigate to:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\http
2. Click "Registry" menu and export this key (to backup).
3. Delete "http" entry.
4. Click Start, Run and type "Control Inetcpl.cpl" and click "Programs" tab in the resulting dialog
5. Choose "Reset Web Settings"

Now that the 1st part of http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/nolinks.htm is automated and the URL http association is fixed. See if the problem persist.

If yes, try IEFIX util available from :
http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/IEFIX.htm

NOTE: If the problem is fixed, post the contents of the REG Export (the "http" key which you backed up) here.

Ramesh,

You could ask him to export it again and then do an FC (or windiff)
of both files. My guess is it will be this (at least):
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\HTTP\SHELL\OPEN\DDEEXEC\TOPIC]
@="WWW_OPENURL"

(Wrong case. Looks like an imprecise manual override.)

Also my open command has a fully qualified pathname (not 8.3 style).

Hi Robert,

That might be a possibility (WWW_OPENURL). Not sure about the 8.3 thing as my 98 system has the 8.3 format and works fine. Have you also noticed there is no mention of Netscape or it's related components in the REG export? This raises a question, "how the user is accessing the link, by clicking a hyperlink of by double-clicking a .URL shortcut?"
