Can't change default browser to IE

D

Darlene

I'm attempting to change my default browser from Netscape to Internet
Explorer 6.0 on a Windows 2000 PC. In IE, I went into Internet
Options, Programs, and checked the box "IE should check to see whether
it is the default browser." I then closed IE and reopened it, but I
did not get the popup box asking me to confirm that I want it to be my
default browser. I am using Netscape Messenger for my e-mail so do
not want to uninstall Netscape.

Ramesh,

Thanks for the instructions on how to force Internet Explorer to
prompt for the default browser check. It worked--sort of. I did get
the prompt and I confirmed that I do want IE to be my default browser.
I restarted my computer, then clicked on a link in an incoming
e-mail, but it opened it in Netscape Navigator! I don't get it.

Hi Darlene,

If you're using Netscape Messenger (or any Netscape add-on), the clickable
links may always open in Netscape browser, as defined in it's .js file,
rather than the setting defined in the registry. The following steps assume
that you're not using Netscape based mail client.

Open a Outlook Express email message, and click an URL in the message. If it
still opens with Netscape, try a mini-repair of Internet Explorer, by
regitering it's core DLL files. Type these commands from Start/Run dialog:

REGSVR32 /i SHDOCVW.DLL
REGSVR32 /i URLMON.DLL
REGSVR32 /i MSHTML.DLL
REGSVR32 /i BROWSEUI.DLL

Then, open Internet Options, Programs tab. Click 'Reset Web Settings' button
once. Reboot. If the problem persist, export these registry keys and paste
the contents here:

HKCR\http\
HKCR\https\
HKCR\ftp\

To open Registry Editor, click Start/Run and type REGEDIT.
