Data Execution Prevention

Dave

Help please. In easy stages please as I am a bit of a technophobe.

I have an ATX Athlon 64 MB computer with an Athlon 64 3200+ processor.
I use Windows XP. The Data Execution Prevention facility has been
activated. This prevents me getting into 'My Computer' and other
programmes.

I ran a Virus check using Avast. The scan revealed one virus. I
removed it and unfortunately do not know what it was. The virus
checker now shows that the computer is clear of viruses.

Is there any way that I can get my computer back into use, or will it
be necessary to reformat the computer.

I have read some of the comments concerning this problem on the web but
can find no root cause - other maybe than the virus - which caused the
problem. I note suggestions to turn the programme off but I cannot
access 'My computer' to carry out that action

I would be very grateful for any help in this matter.

Regards. Dave
