Customized Toolbars Don't Stay

R

Roger Tregelles

Hi Folks,

My system was just upgraded to Outlook 2003 from Outlook 2002. I customized
the email toolbar to include an icon for Insert Picture and Background. When
I exit Outlook and restart Windows XP and then open Outlook again the
changes that I made to the Toolbar no longer appear. How do I make changes
to these toolbars and retain the changes permanently. Also, could anyone
recommend a good book to use as reference with Outlook 2003. Any help would
be greatly appreciated.

Try renaming your outcmd.dat file to outcmd.old while Outlook is closed.
Outlook will rebuild the default toolbars the next time you open it. If your
changes to the toolbars "stick" after doing this, then you know it was the
outcmd.dat file causing the problem. Make sure to make a backup of the new
outcmd.dat file so you can restore it if you ever run into the same problem
again.

Note: Since you're using Windows XP, you'll need to search in hidden
folders to find the outcmd.dat file.

There are some books recommended at http://www.slipstick.com/books/user.htm.

Jocelyn,

I tried your recommendation to the letter and it still doesn't work. I can
make the changes to the toolbar and then when I exit Outlook and
restart...poof...their gone. I wish I could post screenshots here to show
you which toolbar I'm talking about. It's the one right above the message
that has the Bold, Italic and Underline icons (among others) that I've been
trying to modify. Does it make any difference that I'm using Microsoft Word
as my email editor and the format I use for all my messages and replies is
HTML? This is driving me nuts. I insert pictures and emoticons routinely in
all of my messages. I'm thinking of asking IT here to put Outlook 2002 back
on my system if I cannot get this resolved. Any further help and direction
you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

That is the E-mail toolbar in WordMail. I haven't been able to find much
about this issue in my research. It could be an Outlook 2003 thing...I am
using Outlook 2003 and Word as my e-mail editor, sending messages as HTML,
but I haven't tried making any changes to that toolbar. If I find anything
out I'll let you know.

Jocelyn,

Thanks for your reply. I found that if I show the Formatting toolbar (which
has the icons I need) that I don't need to customize the WordMail toolbar.
This will work to meet my current needs. Maybe Microsoft can fix this in a
future update. Thanks again for all of your help with this problem, take
care.
