Crazy Diskette Error for me

I have tried all of the suggested solutions here as far as trying to get the
latest Windows Defender definitions installed on this one PC. It works just
fine on some other PCs I've installed it on. I have had at least one other
where I had to uninstall and reinstall to get the definition updates working
again. But, this one particular PC wil not succeed no matter what I try.

I have uninstalled, used the msiexec step, blown away folders, and even run
a registry clean before and after a re-boot. When I re-install, it installs
fine, but will never get the updated definitions. When I go to the Windows
Update site, it shows the latest definition info there. But, it tells me
it's already downloaded and waiting for Windows Update to install it. How
many days should I wait for that to happen? Rhethorical question -- it will
never happen.

It seems the updates get downloaded, but the actual install of them never
happens. That may be why I get that odd error 0x80240022 when I try to get
the updates from inside Windows Defender. It thinks I have them, but can't
figure out where the system put them.

What can I do to get this resolved?

This is Win XP Pro SP2 completely current with a SATA 150 WD Raptor 72Gb HDD
drive on an ABit mobo. I have it into two equal partitions for C: and D:.
The system has 1Gb SDRAM installed on a 3.4GHz Pentium 4.

Thanks for reading.

If I can post anything anyone needs in order to help, just ask.

I have had the very same experience, posted some time back with no response.

At least in all of my uninstall and re-installs (at least a dozen) I was able
to get the diskette error 0x80240022 to go away for now. It could appear
again at any time I suppose.

My main problem at this point is that the updates, even though they download
according to the Windows Update site, never install on this PC. I wish I
just knew a way to force an install. I'm willing to do that. :)

I saw this one newer .exe file that I am wondering what its function is, why
it was stuck as a process in RAM, and just what kicks it off. I have seen
other remarks elsewhere that this program, mpas-fe.exe, can hang up where
updates won't get installed. I think the hangups in those instances was
caused by Process Guard or ZoneAlarm. But I don't use either on this PC.
So, could it be that the Windows FireWall is choking the installation? Maybe
I should try turning that off and see whether anything improves.

Still left guessing....

Interesting thought. I use ZA Pro on this machine and have had it query
mpas-fe.exe and `in the past and `allowed` but really can`t recall the
circumstances under which it did and whether it was on the one occasion I had
the diskette error problem. To resolve it I used the Windows Installer
cleanup Utility.

I hadn't looked in the Event Viewer for this before now.

I see under Applications I get the message "Internal MSI error. Installer
terminated prematurely." That is right after I try to update from Windows
Defender and it does appear there is a download made from MS. But, as I said
before, the updates never get installed.

Hi Carl;
Have you attempted the manual definition download and install that Tom
Solar asks for and performs on every definition update? See the above
thread:

In a re-read of your message, I see there must be a link to get that
download. Since I don't see that message anywhere, there is no way I have a
clue how to get it.

I did find the latest d/l'ed file in my Windows Install folder where I tried
to execute that .msi file locally. That is when I saw a problem in the Event
Viewer.

This is a lot of effort for no return to this point. I'm about to hang it
up because I don't get paid to work this hard to simply install software.

If this is the file that is supposed tyo be a manual download, it doesn't
work for me either:

mpas-fe_b2e45033bd220e92e45cf3a9f5431d06b1404a6b.exe

Carl;
Tom Solar can't use Windows Update by corporate policy, so he's missing the
prerequisite patches to get the automated definition updates to run when
they become available, and thus has to manually download and install the
definitions each time. The problem with doing this is that the name of the
downloaded exe file changes on each iteration of the definitions,
consequently he has to ask for this name/link before he can update his
definitions.

I'm suggesting that you force the install similarly, since you say your
willing to do that. Here is the link (provided above by Engel for Tom) to
the current definitions for a manual update which bypasses Automated
Updates, although the end result will be the same as the new definitions
are installed to Windows Defender:

http://www.download.windowsupdate.c..._ae73536da57e6ea3b1ef720feb912589e7acb128.exe

So all you should need to do is click on the above link and install the
definitions manually via a Run in Place. I suspect your also missing some
pre-requisite files from Windows Update, for the automated updates to work.
But have you tried Windows Update using Express scan and accepting all
offered updates? Is your Automatic update process set to just Automatic in
Control Panel > System or do you have something else checked there as well?

Thanks for the exact link. I'll try it shortly.

I have had no issues with being completely uptodate via WindowsUpdate on
this PC (yet). As I said in my first post, this PC is completely current. I
was fooling with that area within the last couple of hours and whatever I did
brought back four optional programs I had hidden. I guess I cleaned up too
much. The only other choice left besides the Definition Update is an update
for my Viewsonic monitor. I usually don't do video and monitor updates from
the MS site.

I tried to get that link installed -- no joy. It runs but still nothing gets
installed. It seems that's were I am now. No installation of updates even
though they seem to be downloaded locally.

I have now given up on it. I've wasted way too much time and just did a
complete uninstall of anything that is Windows Defender. I'm done with it.

Thanks for trying to help.

Just a followup...

Finally, after multiple installs with convoluted cleanup routines in
between, just half an hour ago, I decided to try to load Windows Defender
Beta 2 once again.

It installed fine and went out to get the updates before it did its quick
scan. This time, after the download, it installed just fine.

I don't know what changed. And I'm hoping the numerous install errors I
uploaded through Fault Bucket reports helped (who knows?). But, something
changed on the MS end where whatever was done has helped immensely.

Thanks for killing that really annoying buggy situation.
