Hello Mitka,

Remove the current signature file. To do so, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, click Run, type the following line (copy and past if you
wish), and then click Ok.

Msiexec /x {A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C}

2. Open Windows Defender.
3. Check for new definitions. To do this, click the Help options arrow next
to the Windows Defender Help icon, click About Windows Defender, and then
click Check for Updates.

I have the same problem, but the message that appears 0x80070422 can not be
started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices
associated with it. pls help

That's not the same problem, and your post is easily missed, because it
follows a successful resolution to a different problem.

Have you disabled the "bits" service on your machine?

Are Autoupdate and Windows Update functional?

Hi Eric,

I had the same error and did these things in the order you prescribed them,
and I just get the same error over again. I'm going to reboot and give it
another shot, but in the meantime do you have any other suggestions?

Here's my update, so to speak: I restarted and updated it and it worked.
Didn't have to run msiexec again, although I did it twice before I rebooted
and nothing changed at that point. Thanks!

Ok, the surest way to stop updating problems in Defender is to make sure that
your "Background Intelligent Transfers Service" is running. To do this go to
Run then type services.msc and go to Background Intelligent Transfers
Service. Right click and go to properties then under the General Tab set it
as automatic. Next thing is uninstall Windows Defender in Add/Remove programs
and then in Add/Remove programs you should go to Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1
and uninstall this and any updates and hotfixes for .NET 1.1. You can
uninstall the hotfixes by clicking the "show updates" box in the Add/Remove
programs window. You should only have Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 now and
1.1 should be uninstalled. Next restart your computer and then install
Windows Defender and all updating problems are a thing of the past. (I do not
take credit for this fix- I found it on another post and it is the only thing
that worked for me after trying new fixes for a very long time. It has
something to do with .NET 1.1 and 2.0 not working properly together.)
