Crashes with XP

I'm experiencing regular crashes with XP. Symptoms are as
if the reset button has been pressed. The computer
switches off with no warning and then immediately switches
back on again. Usually it does this three or four times
within a few hours and then it might not happen again for
several weeks.
Anyone any ideas what might be causing this? I have up to
date virus and firewall and regularly run adaware.
 
First thing that you need to do is go to System Properties / Advanced /
Startup and Recovery / Settings / uncheck auto restart. This will stop the
os from restarting and should give you a stop error message . Copy message
in it's entirety , and repost on this thread with the information. This will
help in troubleshooting your problem , which can be caused by various
hardware and software. Jym
