Win XP Fails to shut down

On my new computer, XP Prof. was installed in Sept. '06.
Recently I have trouble to switch off XP. Either it take 5 min. or it does
not switch off at all.
Symptoms: On the lower taskbar some icons disappear, but then the process
stops with several icons left on the taskbar. Consequently I have to force
the computer down by removing electricity or using the computer reset switch
(which I hate to do).

This does generally not happen when I shut down immediately after strating
up. But mainly after some hours work.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for your suggestion. This seems to work very well. At least my
problem of slow exiting of XP seems to have been resolved.
