XP not shutting down

Hi there,

I have got a problem (I'm running Windows XP Professional).

When I click Turn Off, the computer's icons on the desktop vanish and
Windows is about to shut down, and then it hangs and that's it. I have
to switch the computer off manually.

It may have to do with the following.

I downloaded AVG anti-virus software from Grisoft, installed it and
then the computer crashed. I didn't even have time to uninstall AVG.
It kept crashing and I went into Safe mode, selected Last Known Good
Configuration and pressed Enter. The computer took a few minutes to
digest this and then it had reset itself. I rebooted the computer,
uninstalled AVG and everything was honkidori.

I then activated XP's firewall, and this caused problems as well. I
disabled the firewall and ever since the computer freezes when it's
about to shut down.

If anyone has a solution, then please let me know.

Would it be safe to repeat the action in Safe Mode as described above?

Thanks very much indeed,

Jason
