corrupt local profile

After installing update 908531 on my XP Pro system on a Thinkpad, I have lost
my administrater user profile and access to My Docs, etc.
Error message: Windows cannot load the locally stored profile. Possible
causes include insufficient security rights or a cprrupt local profile.
Detail: An I/O opertion initiated by the registry failed unrecoverably.
The registry could not read in, or write out, or flush, one the the files
that contain the system's image of the registry

I've tried Thinkpad's System Restore, but it does not touch the registry.
Suggestions?
