User Profile Unavailable Overnight

There is an odd error that developed on my XP workstation a few months ago.
It’s a new computer and the problem began happening about a month installing
it. Here is the scenario:

At the end of each work day, I reboot my computer and leave it sitting at
the logon prompt until the next morning.

When I go to logon the next morning, it will not load my locally stored
profile. 2 error messages appear while Windows is trying to logon. The
Event log details are listed below:

1) Windows was unable to load the registry. This is often caused by
insufficient memory or insufficient security rights.

DETAIL - The process cannot access the file because it is being used by
another process. for C:\Documents and Settings\KevinK\ntuser.dat

2) Windows cannot load the locally stored profile. Possible causes of this
error include insufficient security rights or a corrupt local profile. If
this problem persists, contact your network administrator.

DETAIL - The process cannot access the file because it is being used by
another process.

3) Windows has backed up this user's profile. Windows will automatically try
to use the backed up profile the next time this user logs on.

4) Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on with a
temporary profile. Changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log
off.

As described, a temporary profile with default settings is employed (none of
my desktop settings are there).

If I reboot the computer (without doing anything else), my local profile is
once again used and the temporary profile is automatically deleted. If at
any other time, I reboot the computer and logon shortly after, there is no
problem with my local profile.

The key to this whole thing has something to do with leaving it at the logon
prompt for an extended period of time. This has me totally stumped.

Here are some more details that might be pertinent:

The security permissions for my local profile are correct. I’ve even tried
reapplying them.
The workstation is a 3.4GHz P4 with 1BG of RAM. In every other regard, the
computer runs great.
This computer is a member of a Windows Server 2003 domain.
I am the sys admin here and my user account is a domain admin account.
The OS is XP sp2 will all current security patches installed.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Download and install the User Profile Hive Cleanup utility from Microsoft -
it should be on all your workstations. See if this helps.

It seemed okay overnight (from Thurs to Fri), but didn't work over the
weekend. Back to the drawing board. This truely is an odd one.
