Error at Log In

Dave

I'm trying to log in with the one and only user profile
on my machine. It is the admin user account. This PC is
standalone and not networked.

The error is:

Windows cannot load the locally stored profile. Possible
causes of this error include insufficient security rights
or a corrupt local profile. If this problem persists,
contact your network administrator.

DETAIL - An I/O operation initiated by the registry
failed unrecoverably. The registry could not read in, or
write out, or flush, one of the files that contain the
system's image of the registry.

Can anyone assist?

Is there any way to restore the profile?

You can take ownership of the old profile's files and folders and recover those.

See Help and Support and search for "take ownership"

HOW TO: Take Ownership of a File or Folder in Windows XP

You may be able to salvage some registry settings. See www.dougknox.com, Win XP Tips, Advanced Registry Editing, but if the profile is corrupt, probably not.

Doug...

You were absolutely right. I had to build a new profile
and take ownership of the previous profile's files,
folders etc.

I was unable to edit the registry because Windows was
unable to load the hive...which probably means that it
was corrupt for that user profile...

Not sure how something like that can happen...I hope I
don't have a bad hard drive...

Anyhow...thanks for the help! You're a pro!

You're welcome, Dave, and registry corruption seems to be an issue with XP. And you never know whether it will be a user profile that can't be loaded, or a portion of the registry that concerns the core OS.
