I have a Presario preloaded with Win XP now updated to SP3 and I.E.8 & OE6.
I have a broadband connection at speed upto 2mbps thru a Modem + Router.

This morning when I started the computer the desktop background was not on
Azul but had changed to Amber Flow and quite a few desktop icons were
missing. Besides, the following dialog box appeared .

User Environment
Windows cannot load the locally stored profile. Possible causes of this
error include
insufficient security rights or a corrupt local profile. If this problem
persists,
contact your network administrator.

DETAIL - An I/O operation initiated by the registry failed unrecoverably.
The registry
could not read in, or write out, or flush, one of the files that contain the
system's
image of the registry.

Since the computer was shut down last night properly, I was surprised to see
this ERROR msg. I tried to Restore it to a previous date, but, again it said
that

Your computer cannot be restored to ......

I then shut down the Modem and Router and tried the Restore. After
restarting the computer everything came back to normal!

What could be the cause and what should be done to prevent such happening in
future as I have a lot of data and mails which I can ill afford to lose?

Thanking you
Regards

Hi, Capt K Ripendran
No boat or ship is unsinkable; no computer is immune from failure. Back up
the stuff you can ill afford to lose - NOW! If the stuff is extremely
important, then have two separate backups at two catastrophe-independent
locations, in proper containers. Most important of all, verify that each
backup can be properly restored onto a different computer with the very
latest OS, so that you are sure that when you eventually migrate to another
OS your restoration tools will work there.

Doing backups right takes a lot of thought and some trial and error. You
might want to have an 'expert' set it up. Just make sure that you actually
independently test and verify the solution you and your expert come up with,
and periodically retest to ensure the data from the oldest and newest
backups can be restored. Trust but verify! Your expert may be another
'Bernie Madoff'.

Thank you for your comments. I will make backups of all data in future.
Meantime, I would like to know as to what could have caused the problem -
such as the USER PROFILE getting corrupted?!
