Modem

I have a Compaq Presario SR 1155 IN preloaded with Win XP SP2 and now
upgraded to SP3. It has a AGERE Systems PCI Soft Modem. All these days it
was working well and now suddenly I get ERROR 633. Under Modem Options, it
shows that it is attached to COM3 whereas under Device Manger there is only
COM1!

When I checked the modem log, it reads as under:

Opening the modem device failed with error 000005aa

What could be the problem and how can it be rectified?

Thanking you

Internal modems have a COM port built-in. You may have COM1 as part of the
motherboard, but the internal modem provides another.

COM1 & COM3 usually share the same interrupt and this often causes problems
if you have another device on COM1. Try switching the modem's com port to
"2".

Internal modems control the COM port settings it uses and it will only
show up under the modem entry in Device Manager. The Ports section
will only list the separate comm ports delivered on the motherboard or
separate PCI card.

Thank you for the input.

As suggested, I changed the Modem's COM port to "2" in the Advanced Port
Settings. It did NOT work. I then uninstalled the modem and restarted the
PC. It installed by default in COM 3! Besides the ERROR msg 633, when I try
to Query Modem under Diagnostics, I get the following msg:

"The port the modem is attached could not be opened. This my be the result
of hardware conflict.Check the device manager to verify all devices are
functional".

In the Device Manager all devices are indeed functional. Infact,
Communication port in COM1 shows IRQ as 04 whereas Modem in COM3 shows IRQ
as 22! So, what could be wrong?

Thanking you

IRQ 22 is correct as most internal modems are PCI based.

Further my below TWO Emails, I tried to download an Updated driver for Agere
from the below website, so that the Modem might work with the latest Driver,
but I am unable to do so.

ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software7/COL16387/pv-43225-1/sp26828.exe

When I try in my other PC i.e. DELL I am able to do it! I tried to copy it
in a CD and have it installed in my Presario but to no avail! Can you
suggest remedy?
