converting .mov file to 'generic' video file

I have a quicktime (.mov) file that I would like to
edit. How do I convert it to a file that moviemaker will
accept (maybe a .mpg file?)?
 
I took an old BMW ad transferred from my Mac and originally in .MOV format
and loaded in QT Pro/Win, then exported to an .AVI format using Indeo codec.

WMM imported it just fine.
