Contact List Funkiness

A friend is using Outlook XP and is having a small problem with his contact
list.

If he right clicks a contact in his contact list and chooses New Message to
Contact he gets an error basically stating the e-mail address is invalid.
However, we've confirmed that the Email address field does have a valid
e-mail address (the format is correct also).

Now, also related to this. In the To: field in a new message, if he types
the name of a contact and hits send, he gets the dialog box that basically
wants to confirm who he is wanting to send the message to. However, when he
chooses the contact it seems like it's pulling the data from a field OTHER
than the E-mail field.

Another example, also related. If he tries to create a distribution list and
tries to add contacts, it adds them as a blank entry (a single space,
actually) and SOMETIMES it adds them as a phone number.

It seems like it's actually looking at maybe an alt phone number field
instead of the e-mail field. How do we fix this?
