Outlook autocomplete not same as Outlook Express?

R

Robin

The boss recently got upgraded to Outlook 2002 and is not happy. In OE, he
could add a name and e-mail address to his address book and when he started
typing the name into the "to" field, it would autocomplete the e-mail
address. Now that he's on Outlook, it seems that he has to start typing the
name in exactly as it appears in the cache file, otherwise, it does't fill
in the e-mail address. Trouble is, some nicknames in the cache file start
with the first name and some with the last and he doesn't know which to use.
I haven't been able to find a place that he can change the nicknames to what
he wants to use. The knowledgebase refers to the 'nickname' field in the
contact properties but my contact properties form doesn't have a nickname
field and I can't find any reference to one in the help section. thanks!

Was there a question in here somewhere?
The nickname field has nothing to do with autocomplete.
Once the boss has sent enough messages to have populated a robust
autocompetion cache, he'll be fine.

Thanks for your reply. I asked about the nickname field specifically
because this article in the knowledgebase refers to it in conjunction with
autocomplete:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;287623

and my question was whether there is a field that he can specify what the
nickname should be.

The cache is robust enough for the autocomplete to work. The problem is
that some nicknames appear in the cache file as 'lastname, firstname', and
some by 'firstname lastname'. Therefore, he doesn't know which name to type
in to get the autocomplete to fill it in.

In Outlook Express, he was able to enter the name into the address book the
way he wanted it, and then it would use that name to fill in the
autocomplete. He wants to be able to do the same thing in Outlook.

The question: is this possible and if so, how?

thanks

That refers to the Nickname cache, not the Nickname field.
No, it's not possible to designate which name field is used for matching.
Nor should it be necessary. I've never seen anyone have this problem. Try it
yourself. Type the first three letters of a name. It will show any match in
either first name, last name or email address. Outlook 2003 will do it after
typing only 1 letter.

I have tried typing in the first 3 letters myself, and if it were working
properly, I would not have had to submit a question about it. It appears to
only autocomplete correctly if the first 3 letters match the first 3 letters
of the nickname that appears in the cache file, and sometimes that nickname
starts with the first name and sometimes it starts with the last. It
appears to just be taking the nickname from what appears in the 'from' field
in the e-mail. thanks!!!

I can't reproduce that behavior at all. Mine works as exactly I described.
How was this cache populated? Primarily from replies or new messages?
You have an early version which may not work as well. You can try resetting
the cache to rule out a corrupted NK2 file.

Is there a contact in the address book (contacts) for the address? If so, it
uses the display name after it's resolved. Otherwise it uses the display
name on the original message and you have no control over how senders
configure their accounts.

Also - note that OE's autocomplete feature required you to have a contact in
the address book to work, Outlook caches everyone you reply to or send new
mail to - whether or not you have a contact for that address. Because OE has
one address book format and only uses names from the address book, it can
limit how the names are displayed in the cache.

I think that this utility might help you.

It is an NK2 file editor. You can find it at www.dcs-
imaging.com/products.htm

Read about it and see if it can help.
