Computer will not shutdown after SP-2

It hangs at a black screen (windows has shutdown) but the PC will
not "power down". I've tried all of the fixes found with a google
search. I think I need to load Advanced Configuration Power Interface
(ACPI) from the Win CD, but can't figure out how to do it? I've tried
Mick Stone's tip from this NG, but can not figure out how to install
ACPI with a Repair install. Never saw this problem with SP-1. TIA

Is the power button effectual? If you pull the plug does it boot normally
after re-powering?

Does a restart rather than shutdown work normally?

Fixes to SP2 regarding this? There aren't any! What did you find and do?

If shutdowns worked on SP1 then that was already there and still should be.

So you had an XP SP1 machine that would do shutdowns normally and then
installed SP2 and shutdowns now hang; is that right?

"Slipstreamed" seems a possible source. What happens with a clean XP SP1
install followed by a clean run of the SP2 download?

Thanks root for the comeback:

Yes

Yes

These were suggestions from my research at MS and google:
1. Changed power management Never for HD and Monitor power down.
2. Reloaded AC97 (not logo tested) audio drivers.
3. Changed graphics driver from Ms to nVidia 61.77
4. Installed latest Zone Alarm (free)
5. Turned off ZA, still no shutdown.
6. Turned off all items in msconfig, no help.
7. Searched MS and google for "black screen at shutdown" and tried every
fix suggested.
If shutdowns worked on SP1 then that was already there and still should
be.

Yes, isn't that a head scratcher?

No problems with several slipstreamed CDs I've made.

I've found a cure, albeit a long one. I did another clean install and hit
F5 to
scroll to ACPI (3rd from top) per Mick Stones suggestion in this NG. That
solved the problem. But it's very tricky to do because I'm also running
Sata
drives, and have to also hit F6 to load those drivers...so it's first hit F5
when
the screen calls for F6, select ACPI, then hit F6 to load drivers for my
SATA.
Fun, fun!
