Standby mode stops working after Service Pack 2 installation

Standby mode worked _flawlessly_ for years, until I installed SP 2 last week.

Now, when going into standby mode either manually or based on power
management settings, about 25% of the time the following occurrs: the video
turns off but the PC freezes with the fans and disk drives running. A reboot
is necessary to recover.

The SP 2 installation executed without any errors, and absolutely NOTHING,
other than SP 2 having been installed (not even a screen saver) was changed.
The BIOS looks like it's set correctly to auto detect hibernate or suspend.

The PC in question is an Asus P4P800E mb, Radeon 9600, P4 3.0, 1 GB RAM. It
is otherwise very stable and runs 24x7 (now that it can't suspend) without
any problems.

I tried diagnostic startups with only basic devices and services loaded, but
Standby mode failed as it does following a normal startup.

I upgraded the video drivers, but that didn't help.

Is there some other tool or methodology I can use to figure out what process
or driver is getting stuck when the PC tries to enter Standby?

Thanks in advance,
Martin

I'm thinking it's some driver that was OK before SP2, but now isn't working
fast enough for the changed operating system. Try updating the rest of your
drivers. Otherwise, trial & error: disable hardware devices via Device
Manager; use msconfig to disable startup items and services.

Paul,

Thanks for your reply. It is absolutely a driver that was OK with SP 1 but
doesn't play nicely with SP 2; SP 2 was the only change that caused Standby
to no longer work.

As I mentioned, I did use msconfig to disable all non-essential drivers and
services and Standby still didn't work. I also updated the video driver and
checked for updates for some others.

I'm looking for a tool or methodology more precise than trial and error that
will help me identify the one driver that's interfering with Standby mode so
I can fix it ASAP.

Thanks,
Martin
