Computer running sloooooooooooooow

I am running XP with a AMD Duron tm processor, 80gig HD and have high speed
internet connection. My problem is the applications I run, which are mostly
Micorsoft, the computer takes soooooooo long to run anything, unusually long.
Is there something I can do like update my processor, which is one thing I
haven't tried yet, to speed up my computer? I have run anti virus and ad ware
programs, found nothing. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You need a 3-Step process to ensure optimal performance:
(1.) Cleanup - Temp files, TIF, SpyWare/Malware, unused apps
Trim back Startups & Watchdog applets
(2.) Tune-up - Chkdsk, Defrag & Update Drivers & applications
(3.) Prevention - Security tightening, Real-time protection.

These are just broad strokes of what needs to be done. Basically,
its like a 50,000 mile tune up for your car. Most importantly, before
doing any of these things backup your personal data and image
your XP instance.

A faster processor would help, I don't think they made Durons much over 1
Ghz. However, that may require a new motherboard.

After doing the cleanups suggested by others, a memory upgrade could help a
lot. Relatively low cost and usually simple to perform. I think the average
computer today has 512 MB, with 256 being the minimum. I have an ancient
laptop ( 500 - 650 MHz) which I upgraded to 320 MB and it made a great
difference.

Run a disk cleanup- heres a link
http://pcworld.about.com/magazine/2007p162id97442.htm
Run chkdsk and then defragment the HDD, this will help reduce load
caused by junk and increase file access time and program response. DO
these regualrly to maintain speed. Also add enuf RAM to support ur
programs.
