Code 32: CD-RW/DVD Not Working

Hi,

I am running WinXp Home Edition that is uptodate with Service Packs and
Patches.

I have Creative Live Value Card, which had disappeared from the Device
Manager. I was attempting re-install the software for it. When the
installation CD was running, Windows hung and I had to press the re-set
while the CD drive was running, to start Windows again.

I am able to boot to Windows normally but my Samsung SM-332B CD-RW/DVD drive
is disabled with yellow exclamation mark, with Error Code 39. with the
message " Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The
driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39) ". The Creative Live Card is
still missing from Device Manager.

I have researched this and from Microsoft's site have tried the following,
WHICH HAS NOT SOLVED THE PROBLEM.

Would immensely appreciate help in resolving this problem.

TIA,
MPM

1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
2. Locate the UpperFilters value under the following key in the
registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
3. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
4. Locate the LowerFilters value under the same key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
5. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
6. Quit Registry Editor.NOTE: After you remove the Upperfilters value
and the Lowerfilters value, if you notice lost functionality in a particular
program, such as CD recording software, you may need to reinstall that
software. If the problem recurs, consult with the software vendor for
assistance.
7. Restart your computer.

Goto http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpcd.php#problems
See the second "problem" (read the caveats)
Run the provided registry patch

That should fix your problem (basically, a filter driver is missing or
non-operational, the registry patch will delete the filter drivers
references for your cdrom(s))

Basically, the reg file from above carries out the steps displayed at this
website

(It'll fix code 41 errors too as per the contents of the last kb article)

Hi Gary,

Thanks for the quick reply.

If you see the bottom of my post, I did try the solution given by MS to edit
the registry key, which did not work. If your registry patch does the same
thing, will it resolve the problem ?

Mohan

Hi,

Thanks. The DVD and the firmware does not appear to be the problem. I tested
the drive in another system, where Winxp recognised and installed the drive.

It certainly is a Windows problem. Am contemplating a ' Repair ' install.

And which patch was that you tried from Microsoft? Can you elaborate a bit about the KB.

Hi,

I applied the registry edit recommended by MS. It is at the bottom of my
first post. Even after deleting the upper and lower filter values from the
suggested key, it does not work. I would also point out that these two
values still remain deleted.
