Why when I double-click on Internet Explorer icon on my desktop does it
create a shortcut on the desktop and doesn't open IE? I'm running XP Home
with IE6. All updates are installed. Thanks for any help.

Because you moved the mouse as you clicked. Add IE to the Quicklaunch
bar where you can single-click to open, or click to highlight, press
Enter key to open.

But if, when you right-click the shortcut, the bold menu item is other
than Open, the associations for .lnk files or .exe files is damaged.

Fix File Associations.
