Checkboxes showing up as blank, can't show checkmark

I've started encountering problems in the following areas
(that I've noticed), where all checkboxes show up as
being blank and you can't put in a checkmark:

1) System Configuration Utility...all selections
under "Startup" and "Services" tabs

2) Disk Cleanup
....

You can select checkboxes and the function will occur but
there is never a checkmark when you click on it.

Any ideas?

Problem solved...Windows Update had (with my blessing) installed an updated
NVidia video driver...messed up various icons, plus the previously mentioned
items. Did a "Rollback Driver" in the display properties and all is well
again.
