CD Burner Problem after installing Security Patch

Since installing the most recent critical MS Patch
(KB824146-x86-ENU.exe) yesterday, I have been having constant problems
burning CD's. There seems no apparent pattern to the problem, with one
exception: if I am online the burn will definitely fail about halfway
through, and my dial-up connection will disconnect at the same time. I
am usually not running anything , just remainind connected. This had
never happened before. Prior to this I had always maintained
connection while burning discs.

And burns are failing when I am offline, too. I get an error message,
which I send to Microsoft, and get a generic message I have seen what
seems like thousands of times before, essentially saying it was caused
by a device driver, but MS cannot determine the exact device. Whatever
failure I ever have on my computer, I always get the same message.

I have the most current drivers for my CD writer installed.

Oddly, after each failure, I am unable to open the drive, so must
re-boot to regain control, and then am able to burn discs again. Then,
after several sucessful burns, I have another failure, and the same
message occurs....

Is anyone else having similar problems?
Can anyone suggest how to diagnose this? Or Fix it.

Thanks.
