DVD burner error message

I have an unusual problem, and hope there is an answer in XP.

I have a rather deluxe DVD (LG multi-super) burner that burns
virtually every known DVD format available. It's a nice unit although
we can't use it with the software supplied due to a quirk in the
software that comes with it.

If I install the hardware with driver, XP can burn cd's with no
problems, but the XP support is minimal at best. There is no support
at all in XP for DVD burning at all.

When I install the software to burn DVD's, I get a warning each time
the system is restarted, and each user on the system gets the same
error message. I'd like to inhibit ONLY that error message (if
possible).

During the boot up, the software displays a 'warning' that I can burn
CD's using the supplied software or using XP's (more limited) burner
support. But, it also says that it cannot burn DVD's without disabling
XP's CD burner support-apparently they are incompatible for some
reason. I am presented with the option to disable the CD burner
support on boot up if I so choose. If I DO NOT disable the XP CD
burner support and try to burn a DVD, I am presented with the same
error message by the software and can turn off the CD support and burn
DVD's just fine.

Technically, the error message at boot up is not needed as the
software deal with burning DVD's just fine as soon as it detects a
burnable DVD in the drive. The error message is somewhat
meaningless...hence I don't wantto see it anymore.

So, I'd like to inhibit only this error message in XP if possible.

Right now, I'm running without the software for the burner installed
to avoid the error message.....but, of course, this also precludes me
burning a DVD::>

And, yes, I have installed the updated driver and have also flashed
the firmware in the burner to the latest revision.

Thanks,

Art

Give us a clue here... what software comes with the burner?

If it is like my LG unit, it comes with Nero OEM.

BTW: You can always update the bundled OEM versions of Nero by downloading
the same level of Nero update.

Hi Carl.

OK, that's a fair question.

Before starting though, I admit I DID NOT check the hardware against
the Microsoft Compatibility list because it's not a hardware issue.

The hardware is an LG Super Multi DVD Drive, Model # GSA-4028. It is a
current model. I updated the driver and the firmware on Feb 14, 2006.
It had firmware A201, it now has firmware A208. The website is
http://us.lgservice.com/index_b2c.jsp

I installed the software to get the names of the software aps loaded
from the supplied CD.

There is Cyberlink DVD Solution, V 1.0, which is made up of the
following programs:

CyberLink PowerDVD
CyberLink Power Producer
B's Recorder Gold
B's Clip
DVD-RAM Driver

----------------------------------------------------------

Here is the 'readme' that pops up after the install is complete:

******************************************************************
Limitations on Driver Software for Windows XP

March 13, 2003
******************************************************************

1. After formatting DVD-RAM disc with DVDForm software,
there may be a possibility that DVD-RAM icon are changed to
CD-ROM icon.
At that case, select [Refresh] from [View] menu on Explorer.

2. Caution when using DVD-RAM disks in the DVD MULTI drive
Data cannot be written onto a DVD-RAM disk while the function
for writing data onto Windows XP standard CD-R/RW disks is
enabled.
A message appears when this function has been enabled so when
using a DVD-RAM disk, heed the instruction given in this message
by clearing "Enable CD recording on this drive".

END

----------------------------------------------------------

Nothing happens until the user logs in and XP start to set up that
indivifuals desk top. Near the end of that process, a rectangular box
pops up titled 'RAMASST' with a triangular exclamation point on the
left hand side of the box. In the box, is the following text:

The Windows XP Standard CD-R/RW writing function is active. To write
to a DVD RAM disk, this function must first be deactivated. Do you
wish to deactivate it?

Check box for YES and NO, you must click one or the other to do
anything.

(Should you wish to choose to deactivate it here, you can still
activate the Windows XP Standard CD-r/RW write function by selecting
the "enable CD Recording on this Drive" setting in the DVD Multi Drive
properties.

---------------------------------------------------------

My contention is that the drive manufacturer should supply software
that does not exhibit htis behavior...but, admit the supplied software
is quite adequate except for this quirk.

Can I suppress this error message without suppressing other error
messages?

Thanks,

A

NO, it's NOT Nero! Wish it was::>

I had a friend give me a Nero OEM disk from his system to try-I know
it was not Kosher to do this, but wanted to see if it had the same or
similar problem.

It would not install becasue the drive was an unsupported drive....so,
couldn't even try Nero.

OK, I did call LG Electronics and asked them what the fix was. The
customer service rep was going to send me the same software that I
already had and wanted me to reinstall it. Since I was the original
purchaser of the drive and ran it previously in Win 98, I knew I had
the correct software and that reinstalling the same software wouldn't
fix anything.

At that point I asked to talk to a supervisor. The supervisor seemed
to be much more knowledgeable.

He told me XP has it's own DVD driver called dvdramsv which it insists
on loading and running even though LG's software has it's own version
of the same software called ramasst (which works better). This is why
the drive ran like a champ in win 98, but gives this error in XP.

He told me Microsoft is aware of the issue and insists that they (LG)
need to change over their software to use Microsoft's generic driver.

LG basically gave up and started supplying Nero soon after XP came
out.....

So, the new question is.....

Can I modify XP (to stop it permanently) from starting dvdramsv at
boot up???

I'll go back to the Knowledge Base to see if dvdramsv gets any
hits.....

I'm open to other suggestions.

Remove all LG's software installed "reboot" then install the nero program
your friend gave you.

Hi Mike, thanks.

But, I already tried that. I wouldn't expect the NERO and the LG
software to run together, although in some cases, they might. So, when
I tried the Nero software previously, I had un installed LG and
rebooted.

The Nero software told me I couldn't install it for that drive, sounds
like they did something to make the installation disk check the drive
model number before it would install.

So, I'm sunk (I think). The drive cost good money and the LG software
is nice, as I used it in my old win98 system. It's unfortunate that I
might have to buy new software just to run the drive in XP. Bit, it
looks like this is my only solution.

There is a possible fix, since the 2 ram drivers are incompatible...it
might be possible to stop the microsoft dvdramsv from running, which
would solve the problem.

I looked at the knowledge Base last night and didn't find any info
about his, but I did see instructions for building a new hardware
profile and running the PC on that profile. But, in reading the
article, it wasn't clear how to disable a particular driver IF I did
that...so, I'm still tryin.

Any ideas?

Can you update Nero? I found this thread searching google seems that a nero
update might work for you. The poster is using the same drive as you are and
had the same problem.

Go to the second hit down and translate the page.
WinFuture Board -> Nero 6.6 Erkennt Cd-rw Nicht

Good Luck!
