Can't upgrade from XP Home to XP Pro because my version is newer!

Can't upgrade from XP Home SP2 to XP Pro because my version is newer!

Can't wipe machine and start again - it's working OK as it is, but I thought the copy of Pro I bought a few years ago was going to waste on the shelf.

So what can I do? just give it to a friend or something?

I'm just wondering why home won't upgrade to pro....

Hello Jamie,

Actually you can upgrade but since you might have Windows XP home with SP2 installed and are trying
to install Windows XP Professional (without SP2) and hence the problems.

You might want to do a clean installation

If you bought Pro a few years ago, it does not have SP-2.
The difference in Service Packs is seen as a downgrade.

You have two options:
1. Uninstall SP-2 then upgrade to Pro.
2. Slipstream SP-2 minto the Windows XP Pro CD (probably best option)

That's because your XP Pro CD doesn't include SP2. Google for
"slipstream" to find out how to create a CD that has XP Pro + SP2.

If you have SP2 installed, and your XP Professional Upgrade is without it,
it is an older version than what's installed.

You have two choices:

1. Uninstall SP2, do the upgrade, then reinstall SP2.

2. Create a slipstreamed version of XP Professional, including SP2, and use
it. See http://forum.aumha.org/viewtopic.php?t=7262

As far as I'm concerned, that's not a very good reason for upgrading. XP
Professional and XP Home are exactly the same in all respects, except that
Professional has a few features (mostly related to networking and security)
missing from Home. For most (but not all) home users, even those with a home
network, these features aren't needed, would never be used, and upgrading to
Professional from Home is a waste of time and effort. You'll probably
neverknow there's any difference between the two.

So what can I do? just give it to a friend or something?

If it were me, unless I needed or wanted one or more of Professional's extra
features, yes, I'd give it (or sell it) to somebody who did.

I'm just wondering why home won't upgrade to pro....

Explained above.

Ok, Ok! Lol, I think the answer is to slipstream it then!

Sorry about the two posts - OE wouldn't send at first (something about the
message being in MIME format), so I posted it again, but now the original
has appeared.

Anyway, thanks again - glad I don't have a useless copy of Pro sitting on
the shelf!
