Upgrade from XP Home to XP PRO fails -- existing version is newer?

Hi, I am trying to upgrade my XP Home to XP Pro but it fails saying that the
version on the computer is newer than the one being installed. My HOME
version is SP2 and latest updates. The PRO Version is also SP2....any ideas?

My preference is still to "upgrade" as opposed to wiping everything clean
and starting over from scratch.

Are you really truly 100% sure the XP Pro Upgrade CD has SP2 bundled? I
haven't seen one of these yet.

Do a backup of all your data first just in case (should be done prior to any
sort of upgrade) - and then perhaps uninstall SP2 from XP Home, then try the
upgrade. Probably the easiest route.

Yes. Despite what you say, almost certainly the XP Professional
CD is not SP2.

As is mine.

Why not create a "slipstreamed" XP-Pro SP2 and then upgrade with that?
Even if it doesn't work and you have to remove SP2 from your machine,
it will still be a shortcut for the upgrade.

Yes they exist- I have had one around for some time. The box has a
flash "Now includes Service Pack 2. . . " top left

"Lanwench" and Ken yes you can get XP Pro with SP2 integrated.
Check
the e-company store.

Yes, certainly, Harry. I wasn't suggesting that you can't get
them; I even have one here myself. But if Steve is getting the
"version on the computer is newer than the one being installed"
error message, it would seem that his XP Professional does *not*
have SP2 integrated.

Thanks all for your advice. I searched some more and found a similar
suggestion to "slipstream" in the updates. I did this (first time ever btw)
and it almost worked. I then got an error on a CAB file...now stuck partially
installed...more searching...tried the original CD and not the slipstreamed
version (as now I was past the version check). That worked and it installed
with only a few hiccups.

However, alas, my USB mouse was dead. I reapplied the SP (2) and other
updates...still a dead mouse (who would of thought you can do so much with an
ALT and TAB key?)...more searching

Found a related suggestion to de-install the USB drivers (4) and reboot and
let Windows reinstall them...did that...now I have a mouse!

For now, I seem to be OK...hope the above might be useful to someone
else...had I known it, I could have saved myself several hours (for the mouse
problem alone)

....thanks much!

Cool; I didn't know. Haven't seen one yet.
