can't make modem sounds audible

I have a 2004 HP Pavilion with built-in agere win modem that faxes
perfectly. My problem is that I have the Speaker volume set to High in the
modem properties but cannot hear the connection sounds (dial tone, dialing
tones, ringing, carrier tone, etc.). HP Help and Support (In India) says
they are not capable of solving this problem. According to them I have the
latest driver. Using Windows XP Home with SP1.

Sounds are by default within the modem. Some transmit the sounds thru the
system speakers. There is no magic button to increase modem sounds unless you
have an external US Robotics modem. But........?
