Cant login to Laptop

My friend got a laptop used at work, the worker who used
it has moved. He cant find her to get the password . when
the computer boots up it only goes to the login window.
how can we get past it? The computer came from a now
extinct company,The laptop was left behind in a closet.
the administrator and all that set up the network are
gone. How can we get past the window for login? or change
it?

1) If you don't need anything currently loaded on that laptop, it may be
best to boot from a W2k/XP CD and reinstall Windows from scratch - and load
the applications you wish.

I'm a control freak, so I'd probably go with #1.
