I though I had added my nickles worth before but don't think I clicked in the
right spot. I have this problem and wonder if Vista isn't MS new attempt at
a different version of ME. Forget that, I am a very senior citizen and guess
I am a newbie as have only used computers at home and work for about 30
years. Now will some one just explain to me in laymans terms how to correct
this problem. Yes I know one solution is to buy a new version of XP and
reformat but since this new laptop has Vista I would like to make the best of
it. Help please

This new computer of mine isn't 72 hours old and I seem to have joined the
ranks of the Disgruntled Vista Mail Users Club with an undeletable message in
my Outbox which seems to block all subsequent emails from getting Sent.

I've run a software business for 22 years and the b.s. it appears I have to
go through to avoid the problem is scary enough to make me hope that a patch
arrives before I have to do it.

I thought recreating all my old data off my recently motherboard-fried XP
box onto Vista was a pain, but this Mail thing is ominous. Come on, Billy
Boy, get your techno-nerds to fix this insidious bug!!

I also have this problem not only in my "Inbox" but also in my "deleted" box.
I now have approximately 12 undeleteable messages taking space on my email
server. I have changed my email from "Outlook Express" to "Microsoft
Outlook" and haven't experienced the problem yet but I don't like it as well.
I agree that there are thousands of people experiencing this problem and
Microsoft needs to make this a priority fix!

I am having this problem too. When I try to delete, it gives me this msg
"Message could not be displayed Windows Mail encountered an unexpected
problem while displaying this message. Check your computer for low memory or
low disk space and try again." It is really pain in the arse...!!

Hello, i just follow the advise from Steve, but i get the message that the
mail can not be deleted from this folder.
does anyone know how to fix this?

Thanks to Brink.

Yes, that (usually) works. One drawback is that if you leave messages on
the server with a POP3 account, it will download all messages still on the
server again and you'll have duplicates to remove or ignore.

I'm convinced that anti-virus programs are responsible for the problem (in
conjunction with the way WinMail updates the two copies of the database).

You know Steve, this is a damn pain. And for your glib reply, I will tell
you that I also tried ALL of the suggestions that have been posted, including
yours below. The problem is that Windows Mail will NOT (I repeat NOT) let
you cut, copy, move, or patse any of the messages to another folder. Also,
none of the messages I am trying to delete, show that the message could not
be displayed. What's up with that. Anythig where the opriginal text of the
message shows up, is not a problem to delete. So any other suggestions??
This is a problem that Microsoft should address and post a fix for, and not
make users rely on one another for an answer.

I was having the same problem this am. I went into the Delete Box of Windows
Mail, highligted on the message I wanted to delete, clicked open 'Edit' and
then clicked on 'Delete Empty Folder'. Had to delete each message separately
but it did work. It's worth a try. Good Luck

Make sure WinMail is closed.
Click the Start orb.
Click Search.
Click Advanced Search.
Check the box to Include non-indexed, hidden and system files.
For Name type
WindowsMail.MSMessageStore
Click the Search button.
It should list two of them. Delete both

Steve,

Finally a solution which is clear, concise, easy to follow and works for
this problem. It is however, a pain !!. Hopefully they will come out with a
fix so that it doesn't happen. Thanks for being so clear.

I am having same problem. I see a lot of discussion on this. Does anything
work? I have 1 message tied up in my inbox and want it deleted.

If you are not willing to just ignore them, the only way is to delete both
copies of the database (which does not contain the messages, but only
references to them) and let WinMail rebuild it.
First close WinMail, then use Task Manager to make sure there are no
instances of it under applications or processes.
Then click Start | Search | Advanced Search
Check the box to include non-indexed, hidden and system files.
In the Name field type WindowsMail.MSMessageStore and click the Search
button.
It should show you two copies. Delete both of them and re-open WinMail.

Frank, I followed your directions w/o success. Three files appeared (one
was a shortcut). I was able to delete one of the two files, but the second
would not delete. I kept getting message "This action can’t be completed
because the file is open in another program." When I look on the task mgr,
there is no other program open. Any thoughts? Thanks.
