can't configure fast user switching

W

WrongInTheHead

One of our computers won't allow fast user switching. When I click "Start",
"Log Off", and "Switch User", nothing happens. So I went to "Control Panel",
"User Accounts", and "Change the Way Users Log On Or Off". "Use the Welcome
Screen" wss already selected, and I selected "Use Fast User Switching". I
got no error message, but the option didn't take effect. When I went back to
"Change the Way Users Log On Or Off", the "Use Fast User Switching" option
was unselected again!

What am I overlooking?!

This might help:
A discussion about the availability of the Fast User Switching feature
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;294739

This feature is only available if the computer is not a member of a
Microsoft Windows NT, Windows 2000, or Microsoft Windows Server 2003 domain,
and you are not using a third-party product that replaces the Microsoft
Graphical Identification and Authentication file (Msgina.dll).

This feature is enabled by default on computers with more than 64 MB of RAM
that are not joined to a domain.

Thanks, Rey. Our network is peer-to-peer win xp pro, so the only problem
might be the msgina.dll file. It is still present in the \windows\system32
folder. Does this mean it hasn't been replaced? How do I find out for sure?

Check or Edit your registry as necessary. You may need to backup your registry.

Open your registry and find the key below. You may need to create the key if
it does not already exist.

Create a new DWORD value, or modify the existing value, called
'AllowMultipleTSSessions' and edit the value according
to the settings below.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Value Name: AllowMultipleTSSessions
Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Value Data: (0 = Disable Fast User Switching, 1= Enable)

If the value is 0 ahange it to 1.

Exit your registry, you may need to restart or log out of Windows for the
change to take effect.

Or Try Kelly's Tweak
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Line 34. Restore Fast User Switching

To use the Regedits: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it
and answer yes to the import prompt.
