Can't access secure

I visited a client today with a strange problem. She can not access any site
that requires logging on. When she tries to get into MSN Explorer with her
proper username and password it will not connect. If I try to get to her
mailbox by going to www.msn.com and trying to login to her MSN the system
gives an error page in IE after entering the Username and Password. I tried
my .Net account to make sure it wasn't just her account. I also tried
several other sites that I have to log on to and basically the same thing.
Some won't even let me go to the login page to enter id & pw. I looked
around at the security settings and can see nothing that would do this.

Any ideas would be a great blessing.

Don,

Thanks for the reply. FYI, it was the item in the second link that involved
reregistering about 10 dll's that fixed it.

Hi,
Whether or not the OS is XP SP2, there are a number of possible fixes at

I am having trouble logging in to a secure site with our brand new computer
with IE6 SP2. I've tried it on several older computers, without a problem.
The link that don sited below as the second shot doesn't come up and there
was a comment about dll. Could someone help. The login page goes back to
blank login and password when I hit login. thanks

Sandi revised her site a while ago (i.e. since Don posted in January).
Notice that the error is just an HTTP 404 which means the server exists
but the page doesn't. Another clue that all hope is not lost from using
this link is that the URL in the Address bar is prefixed by an MVP Favicon.

Whenever you come across a situation like that it is perfectly valid to try
backing up on the URL to see if the page or similar content can be found
from a higher level index. E.g. press Alt-d,End and then Ctrl-Backspace
to remove anything after the last slash (/).

Doing that finds this page (after redirection.)

<title>Sandi's Site - Home Page</title>
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/

and there you can find a link to a "Site index"
and there using a Ctrl-f find for secur you can find a link to

<title>Problems with secure sites and 128 bit encryption</title>
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers/17.html

was a comment about dll.

In fact, the comment was:

The above page does in fact contain a list of 10 regsvr32 commands.

Could someone help. The login page goes back to
blank login and password when I hit login. thanks

If that isn't enough use some of the keywords you find on that page
as search terms for related articles:

<title>How to troubleshoot situations where you cannot complete MSN sign-up
or connect to SSL secured (128-Bit) Web sites by using Internet Explorer in Windows XP</title>
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;813444

(MSN search for
softpub wintrust initpki site:microsoft.com language:EN
)

Etc.

Hi,
Well... I was composing an answer when Mr. Aldwinckle's appeared ;-)

So, just to add this...
Disable, for diagnostic purposes, any third-party security software-
firewall, antivirus, ad-blockers, etc. Disable toolbars and other add-ons to
IE. You may have to reinstall or reconfigure a program.

Be sure to turn on the Windows firewall (Control Panel> Windows Firewall)
before disabling a third-party firewall.

Hope this helps,
Don
