..... just got my first Canon refill kit but after filling all
cartridges (i950 and s9000) the ink levels still show the same
settings on the graph as before refilling (s9000) - despite a reboot
of PC..... any idea why they don't all show full ??

The i950 uses a prism in the bottom of the ink tank to pass light to a
sensor which lets you know how close to full the cart is.

There are no chips, and no circuits in the cart to say otherwise.

Mine usually will show the old level until I actually print something,
then it reverts to whatever is in the cartridge.

Note that due to the way the level sensor works, it only shows 3 levels:

Full
Partial
Empty

If you didn't fill it as full as factory fills it, it will only register
as PARTIAL, until its near empty, when it will show (and be) pretty much
OUT orf that color.

It shows them seperately for each tank.

Havent used a 9000 so I cant help there.

The meter is usually only reset when a cartridge is changed following a
prompt from the printer. That said, the meter is not really accurate
anyway, but guesses the ink levels most of the time. The only time it
gives an accurate reading when it warns that a cartridge is getting low
- it detects whether or not the ink level is covering the prism (sloping
section) at the bottom of the cartridge.

I have found with my i950 I have to get a low ink warning and only then
after refilling will it show full again. If I fill before the warning it
will not show full.

If resetting the ink indicator is an issue, it's easy to do. Once you have
an empty tank that you don't intend to refill or maybe a new unused one, you
can install the empty, close the cover and the indicator will sense an out
of ink condition. When a refilled cartridge is then installed the indicator
will show full. If you are using an old tank, either use one that had the
same color in it as the one you are resetting or take enough of the sponge
material out so that it doesn't contact the mesh in the printhead. This is
to prevent contamination with the wrong colors. Like all the other posters
mentioned the only time the indicator is of any real significance is when
the ink reservoir is actually empty. Think of it more like a dashboard
warning light and not a gauge.
