Cannot set default font in Outlook 2003

After reinstalling MS Office 2003 (and updating with latest updates from
Microsoft), I cannot change the default fonts used when reading or replying
to plain text messages. Although I set the default font to Comic Sans MS
(under Options/Mail Format/Fonts), when reading or replying I get Arial.
For composing plain text messages, the default font does change as set in
the options. Similarly, I cannot change the font Outlook uses in the
current view; I reset the font under Customize Current View, but it stays
Arial.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Tools>Options>Mail Format> Fonts button. Set the fonts and options you want
there.

Thanks, but that's what I did. The problem: Although in the options it's
set to Comic Sans MS, it has no effect on the way the program displays plain
text messages or replies to plain text messages. I also just noticed that I
cannot change the color of the text for composing a message. Again, I set a
color (e.g., blue) in the options, but when I compose the message, it's
black.

The fonts in messages you receive are set by the sender. You can choose
"Always use my fonts" to try to change this. Make sure you are not using Word
as your email editor, too.

You're right about received messages in HTML, but not when it's a plain text
message. When I read a plain text message, the text is always in Courier no
matter what font I set it to as a default font for reading messages. Also I
cannot set a default font for the text when I reply or forward; it's always
Courier. Further, when I compose a new plain text message, I cannot set a
default color. The message is always composed in black.
