Cannot receive emails again in Windows Mail

I

I am helping a friend with her new Gateway laptop with Windows Vista
Premium.

In the very beginning, I removed McAfee and installed Avast virus
software because I knew that McAfee causes problems with email and I
knew that she wouldn't be able to figure it out.

She has dial up and when we first set it up, she could receive emails
but she couldn't send them. Vista help suggested setting up
authentication type of stuff so I did that and then, she could send emails.

Worked fine for about a month. Then, she could receive but not send
them again. I tried several suggestions that I read from Google and
this forum. They didn't work so then I did the KB941090 fix and that
worked and she could send emails again.

This worked for about a month and now we are back with the same
problem-she can receive but not send emails.

Should I switch her to Windows Live Mail-will it work better? She knows
nothing about computers and I am tired of this problem. Or should I
switch her to Thunderbird, which is what I use?

I was going to buy a new computer but I think I will wait until
Microsoft fixes this bug and others that I have read about. Emails are
the main reason that some people have computers and I can't understand
why they don't come out with a permanent fix.

Thks

Did you run the cleanup program for the McAfee program?

When you installed avast!, did you use the standard install?
If so, it may help to uninstall it and then do a custom install
that tells it to leave out the part that scans email.

You may need to run the KB941090 fix again:

Windows Live Mail is more resistant to some of the problems
that affect Windows Mail. I don't know about Thunderbird,
but at least you would be better able to help her.

The advantage of switching your friend over to WLM instead of
Thunderbird is that WLM will automatically import her accounts,
settings, emails, folders, rules, etc. The only manual import is the
one for contacts, but that is easily done.
