Cannot Login-Keyboard and Mouse Fail

I am stuck in a loop... Keyboard and Mouse fail at Windows login screen,
which requires password for my account, no pass for Guest.

Once the login screen appears the cursor remains "frozen" center of the
screen. I cannot 'tab' or highlight to either icon with either device.

I can F8, but cant get past the login screen to get into safemode.

I have tried both USB and PS2 for both devices.

Computer is a custom built Asus/Amd Athlon 4600/2GB

Boot to the XP setup CD, and choose 'r' for repair. At the Recovery Console
prompt, type:
LOGON
press enter and press enter at the password prompt.
In Windows reinstall the mouse and keyboard drivers.
Go to Start/Run, and type DEVMGMT.MSC , highlight the device, Action menu,
"Uninstall", then restart Windows, to find the device drivers again
automatically.
