Keyboard not recognized at Login

I'm restoring an older PC (P4 2.8 gHz, 1 gig memory, 80 gig hd, ASUS
P4S533E). When I boot the existing Windows XP goes to the login screen but
the keyboard isn't recognized. However, the mouse works and when I click on
the login "Help" it opens up.

The keyboard works in the BIOS. I've tried other keyboards both PS2 and
USB. I've disabled "Legacy USB Support" in the BIOS as well. I even
switched mother boards incase it was hardware. All with the same result.

I'd rather not reload XP but I think that is my only alternative. Any
suggestions before I go this course??

Thanks.

Are you using the classic login (where there is a box for your username
and another for your password), or the Welcome Screen (where there is a
picture for each user)?
If the latter, can you press ctrl-alt-del twice to get to the classic
screen?
