Keyboard NonResponsive Cannot Login to Windows

When I last rebooted my computer, my keyboard drivers have
mysteriously disappeared. I am using an HP Pavillion with Windows XP
Home edition. I have both a wireless USB keyboard and the original PS/
2 keyboard and neither are working.

The mouse works, but when I click on the "Owner" icon to login, I
cannot type my password, so I cannot login. The keyboard does not
light up when pressing CAPSLOCK or NumLock either.

I can login to a GUEST account, because that does not require a
password. When I go to the Control Panel from the GUEST account, I
can see that there is no driver installed for the keyboard. But it
won't let me add hardware from this login because it is not an
administrator. And I cannot login as administrator because I cannot
type a password! I can see the file kbdclass.sys in C:\Windows
\System32\drivers.

Also, it is an HP computer and did not come with boot CDs. I have
tried several reboots, both with and without the keyboard plugged in.

Can anyone please help? Is there something I can do from the GUEST
login without administrator rights?

You can get start the computer in safe mode, log onto Administrator, control
panel and user accounts. From there you can remove your password. All of
this can be done with a mouse.
In the bios setup you should make sure that usb legacy support is enabled.
Usually when a keyboard fails it is the keyboard.

When you use the Guest account, can you get into the Device
Manager? If the keyboard is plugged into the PS/2 port, then
you should see a PS/2 keyboard entry under Keyboards in
Device Manager. When you plug the wireless receiver into
a USB port, then a USB HID device should appear under
Keyboards. The basic keyboard drivers are built into XP.
You only install a driver to enable the extra features of a
specific keyboard or mouse. Can you access the BIOS during
bootup, or get into safe boot, with the PS/2 keyboard?
If neither works, it could indicate a hardware fault.

What do you mean by "boot in safe mode"? Does this mean hitting F8
while booting? That doesn't work - it's as if it does not recognize me
hitting F8. It just keeps booting like usual.

To make matters worse, I accidentally rebooted with the wireless
keyboard install CD in the CDROM. It now says "<some file> not found.
Press any key to continue" on a black screen and doesn't boot. Well,
pressing a key is the one thing I cannot do, so it stays at that black
screen. I've tried doing a hard reboot to shut it down and turn it
back on, but it keeps coming up to this black screen, even though the
CD is out of the CD-ROM now.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

I don't have a Windows CD It's an HP computer, and came already
loaded, with no boot/re-install disks. It's Windows XP Home Edition.

You say it is an HP Pavilion. What model number?

The Manual recommends creating System Recovery Disks when you acquire
your computer (pages 85 to 93 of Manual). Was this done?

You may still be able to access the recovery partition to create a
System Recovery disk -see page 88 of Manual.

To access Safe Mode you would norrmally use the F8 key to access the
Boot Options menu but if you can get in using a guest account try this
procedure:

Entering Safe Mode from inside Windows XP
Use the following steps to start Windows XP in Safe Mode from the
Windows desktop:
Click Start , and then Run .
In the Open field, type: msconfig
Click OK .
The MS Configuration Utility opens.
Click the BOOT.INI tab.
Under Boot Options, select /SAFEBOOT .
Select Minimal .
Click OK . When prompted, click Restart .
The computer starts into Safe Mode. Click Administrator and enter the
password if prompted. Click Yes on the message prompt that appears.
When you are done troubleshooting, repeat these steps and remove the
checkmark from /SAFEBOOT to prevent the computer from always starting in
Safe Mode.

If you get in create a System Recovery disk and then look in Event
Viewer.

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in
the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for the last boot. No
Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate which also appear in
a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you
should double click for further information. You can copy using copy
and paste. Often the link will, however, say there is no further
information.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer.Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

It looks like your system is not seeing a keyboard at the hardware
level. Pressing F8, for boot options, or "any key" to continue,
occurs at the early boot level before the XP user interface even
starts loading. Keypress failure here indicates a possible hardware
fault. To confim this, try to boot into the BIOS. The key to enter
BIOS is usually the Esc or Del key. This will be indicated at the
bottom of the first boot screen. You have to be quick, and press
several times. If this fails, then you do have a hardware failure.

then I rebooted. Now my USB keyboard is unresponsive at the login screen.
It works just fine on the setup screens, etc. I replaced it with a PS2
keyboard and have the same result. I do not have a guest account so I am
unable to login to system.

Any suggestions ? Could this be a pervasive problem and we are the first
ones seeing it ?
