Help! I can't get past my login's loooonnnngggg password, because my @##$%^
laptop keyboard is broken and no longer types the letters I need to login. I
have a USB keyboard I want to use. Numlock lights up at first, but I can
NEVER type anything in on the new keyboard. I've tried everything, but no
joy.

Thanks in advance.

Have you ever used this keyboard on the laptop before? If not, then your
laptop needs to install the drivers to make it work, and it won't install
the drivers until after you've logged on. So to remedy this situation, boot
up in safe mode and log in using the administrator account. Plug in the USB
keyboard and let Windows install the drivers. Now you can reboot and the
keyboard should work and allow you to login.

To boot in safe mode for Windows see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315222.

Does the built-in keyboard work at all, can you get into the BIOS? If so,
look for "USB legacy support" options and turn them on. Attach the USB
keyboard and reboot, and try getting into the BIOS again with the USB
keyboard. You need it to work at this level.

If neither works, you probably need to take the laptop to a service depot.

If your mouse pad is working try using the on screen keyboard....Press the
windows Logo Key +U button at the logon screen and the Utility Manager will
pop up, select On Screen Keyboard, turn off the narrator if necessary.
Place cursor in the login box, then press required keys on the OSK and away
you go. Once windows starts up the OSK will turn off. To turn it back on
again repeat the previous steps. I think you can have it automatically load
up when you next boot or just use the steps outlined.
