hp laptop keyboard problem

A neighbors laptop has a keyboard problem.
Everything works except she can't login to websites that
require a login.
If I connect an external keyboard, she can log in.
the laptop's keyboard generates the charactors on the login
screen, the username shows up, and the passwords show the dots as
they are typed.
Any ideas on what may be causing this?
Thanks,
al

ps: running xphome and IE8.
Same behavior on firefox.

thanks dave, we tried that and all the charactors came out ok. but guess
what, it now also spontaniously brings up a print menu when you type in
word. As before, if you use an external keyboard it works fine. So, turns
out for $22 you can get a keyboard off ebay for this laptop. A bit nervous
about taking it apart, but the keyboard is on order.
Wish me luck.

Before you tear that notebook apart, scan thoroughly for viruses and
spyware. Try spybot search and destroy, AVG anti-virus (free or otherwise)
and Avast! Antivirus (free or otherwise). Try all three, update all three,
do a thorough scan with all three. If you've got some other anti-virus
software on the notebook, try that also, but definitely scan with both AVG
and Avast! -Dave
