Lost keyboard support in XP SP2

This morning, one of our computers in our IT department had lost keyboard
functionality. I tried several different keyboards, both USB and PS2, and
none allowed me to type in a password to log into Windows. In fact, judging
by the LEDs on the KBs, they freeze not long after Windows starts to boot.
However, the original and other keyboards work in the recovery console and
from other bootable CDs. I tried a couple of fixes without success:

1) I used a WinXP CD to attempt a repair on the installation. It went
through the process of installing files, but my keyboard doesn't work when
it asks for the license key. I can't complete the repair process.

2) I booted into the recovery console and replaced the kbdclass.sys and
i8042prt.sys files with copies taken from a working XP machine. This didn't
help.

Finally, I temporarily booted off a hard drive borrowed from a 2003 Server.
The Keyboard functioned at login.

Any suggestions on what might be causing this and how to repair it,
considering that I'm locked out of Windows due to an inability to type a
password? Thanks in advance for any help.

Can you boot to safe mode with a working keyboard?

No. As soon as the Window's splash screen comes up, all keyboard interfaces
are locked out. Other than using a bootable disk, the only possible keyboard
interface is to go into the BIOS setup before it starts to load the OS from
the hard disk.

Did you get this resolved? I am experiencing an identical situation and do not have solution.

Would you let me know how this ended up for you?
