PS2 mouse and keyboard problem

When we originally installed XP pro on my wifes PC we installed it with a
PS2 keyboard and a USB mouse. We now need to install a PS2 mouse (its a
long story). I uninstalled the USB mouse and shutdown the PC. I then plugged
in the PS2 mouse and restarted the computer. XP boots to the login screen
but I have no keyboard or mouse. I did a hard shutdown and removed the PS2
mouse, rebooted and the keyboard comes back. For some reason the PC does
not like a PS2 mouse and keyboard together. Anyone have any ideas??

My first thought is that you have the same problem that I had. I don't know
for sure though but
When you installed the USB mouse did a message pop up saying that the
drivers weren't compatible with XP and do you still want to install? If you
said yes, the loading of the mouse shuts off the i8042 port which is the ps2
mouse. I know because I did the same thing. There is an article on the
Microsoft site about this. This may not be the problem but it is a
possibility.
