Cannot get Remote Desktop to work

Hi Everyone,

Here is my problem. I can't log on to my Windows XP pro computer at work
from home (Remote Desktop). Before upgrading my PC’s I had an older version
of XP pro at work and MS Windows 98 on my home computer and the remote
function worked great… (everything else is the same, IPs, routers, etc.
except that I now have Norton Anti-Virus 2005 on both machines, previously I
had an older version of Norton on both machines)

 I have MS Windows XP Pro Version 2002 with Service Pack 2 on both my home
and office computer… I am signed on as an Administrator on both PCs.

 Home Computer is connected directly to the internet (cable). I have set
up a VPN to connect to my office PC with the Office PC’s IP address…

 Office Computer is on a LAN and it’s part of a WORKGROUP, it is not a part
of a domain. The LAN is
wired to Linksys router (firewall). The office has a static IP and is
connected to a cable IP. I have entered the IP address, subnet mask, default
gateway, Preferred and Alternate DNS server addresses on my office PC. I
have followed all other instructions on both PCs for setting up the Remote
Desktop.

The Linksys router (firewall) has the correct port for listening for remote
desktop and I have turned off the MS XP Pro firewall on both PCs.

I am at a lose as to what to try next. Any suggestions would be
appreciated…

So are you trying to connect while in the VPN session or not? Its not clear to me.

If you don't connect to the office LAN via the VPN can you connect using the Remote Desktop client
from home?

Also note the some folks report that NAV 2005 worm protection also blocks Remote Desktop
connections. I understand its possible to disable worm protection somewhere in the NAV 2005
options...

I have attempted setting up a VPN and going through
Start>Programs>Accessories>Communications>Remote Desktop Connection (is this
what you mean by "Remote Desktop Client?)... If not, I am not sure how to go
through Remote Desktop Client on XP Pro...

I have also tried turning off Worm Protection on Norton Antivirus and it
didn't work... However, I will attempt it again as I might have not had all
the settings as I have them now...

Thanks for your assistance..

Yes...its just the terms VPN and Remote Desktop are two different animals so to speak and mean
different things.

The page I pointed you to earlier has the instructions on how to setup Remote Desktop on the host
and the client, how to call, and some troubleshooting help. If you can test this on the local LAN at
work from another PC on the same network you can find out if you have the Remote Desktop host setup
correctly. If it works over the local LAN then it becomes a firewall/NAT/router port forwarding
issue or an issue of using the correct public IP when calling from the remote client.

If it does not work over the LAN then its an issue with the setup of the Remote Desktop host or a
firewall issue on the host or a NAV2005 problem, etc..

Good Morning "Sooner Al"

Thanks to your help I have isolated the problem… (I still need to work on
how to make a permanent fix, but that’s a problem between me and Norton).

When I tried your suggestion of setting up a remote desktop within the
office I found that it worked beautifully. As you said, it then became an
issue of firewall/NAT/router port forwarding, or an issue of using the
correct public IP when calling from the remote client.

Found two things… 1) I had originally tried the public IP for the office and
it didn’t work… A PC guru told me I had to use the IP address of the PC
itself… Your comments made me realize that the public IP was the correct one.
So I changed it back but it still didn’t work… 2) I had my wife try
connecting from home while I was at my desk in the office. I found that
Norton 2005 was stopping it because a warning message came on the screen on
my office PC that said a threat had been detected and blocked on the Path:
C:\windows\system32\svchost.exe. When I selected the approved box the
connection was completed… If I had not been watching on my PC when my wife
tried to connect from home I would of never solved the problem as I would
never have seen the warning message…

Now I have to figure out how to allow the connection to come through without
being at my PC in the office to override… I am trying to connect with Norton
but they want $29 just to talk to you and I cannot find an e-mail address to
send in technical issues…

Thanks for you help…. If you have any thoughts on how to connect with Norton
would be appreciated…

Glad to hear you have isolated the problem.

I don't use NAV so I can't help, sorry...

Good luck and please post back when you get the fix. That information may help others...

Thanks...
