Cannot boot system - winlogon.exe problem

I uninstalled Internet Explorer to fix a DSL problem and
was unable to reboot my system. I tried every option
using f8 on startup from "Safe Mode", "Safe Mode with
Networking" and the other 6 entries to "debugging mode"
with no avail. All I get in each is this message:

Winlogon.exe - Entry point not found

The Procedure entry Point AssoclsDangerous could not be
located in Dynamic link library SHLWAPI.dll

HP has said to perform a non-destructive recovery, but I
will lose all my documents. Is there anyway to avert this?

.
1 always buy a system that allows you to get to recovery
console and run a repair install.

2 always keep data backed up off the hard drive.

3 remove the hard drive and slave to a working system to
recover the data before running the factory restore.
