Hoping someone can help with this, but I can't log on to my PC using any of
the User Accounts. After I type the password, the system says "Saving your
settings" and logs me out. The system is running OK otherwise, as I can
see and access all its shares from my home network.

Have tried all safe modes and Administrator login with the same result.

Recovery console works fine, but I'm mot sure what to do within it to
address the problem.

Thanks..

Found an earlier incident which answers the problem, from Darren Curtis.

Thanks, Darren - this does indeed fix it.

Producers of Spyware should be bankrupted - each and every one of them

BTW, this problem still occurred in spite of having Spybot, NAV 2005 and
Adaware on the system
..
This is caused by a Spyware program altering a critical Windows file and
registry setting.

Follow the procedures below:

1. Boot to recovery Console

Description of the Windows XP Recovery Console (314058)
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;314058

2. Change Directory to System32 (CD system32)

3. In C:\Windows\system32 Folder Type "Copy userinit.exe wsaupdater.exe"
(without the quotation marks) and press enter

4. Restart the Computer

5. Log in to in Windows

6. Open the Registry Editor and browse to
KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

7. Modify the Value Userinit to C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe

8. Close registry Editor

9. Delete wsaupdater.exe File in C:\Windows\System32 Folder
