Error: System Cannot Log You on Because Domain " " is Not Availabl

I am working on a Gateway 310 with XP Home Edition installed. When I try to
log on in either normal or safe mode I get the error "Error Message: System
Cannot Log You on Because Domain Office Is Not Available". It happens on all
user accounts including Administrator. I have reset the passwords using
Hiren's Boot CD. It still happens. I realize the next logical step is to
reinstall the OS because the registry is probably corrupted. But, the
recovery disks have long since been lost. Question" Is there a way to remove
all registry entries concerning domains and workgroups without destroying the
user profiles? Please advise.

One of the handful of differences between XP home and XP-pro is that
home can't join a domain.

Micro$oft figured that an effective way to handicap XP-home (and prevent
corporations from using it instead of XP-pro) was to prevent it from
being able to join a domain.

Any thoughts on solving the problem?
