You cannot log on to Windows XP after you remove Wsaupdater.exe
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=892893

------

The problem may be an incorrect system drive letter. With a networked
machine, open the registry and connect to the problematic machine and
navigate to:

[MACHINE_NAME\HKLM\SYSTEM\MountedDevices]

and delete all values that look like this:

\DosDevices\C
\DosDevices\D
\DosDevices\E
and so on

When finished, make sure you disconnect the machine from the registry. There
are other ways to gain access to the registry if you cannot connect to the
problematic machine via networked Registry.

Hi WTC. I have a similar logon problem to head_ju and many others, and have
seen your replies to many of them.

At the bottom of your post you say "....There are other ways to gain access
to the registry ...."

Can you tell me how to access the registry from the recovery console, if it
is possible?

Thanks.

Are you having this problem now? If so, could you tell me what
steps/procedures you have tried?

You cannot edit the registry from the recovery console however I know of 4
other ways to do this and possibly more.

1. Create a BartPE Bootable CD.
2. Connect the Registry by a networked machine.
3. Slave the hard to a Windows XP/Server 2003 machine.
4. Do a parallel installation of Windows XP.

If you need detailed instructions, please let me know.
