Windows XP bluescreen on Log In

Hi,
I have found windows XP home to be fine until this morning. However,
today I had a problem. When I installed a windows update (windows installer
3 I think - it was auto-downloaded by windows, so must have been a critical
update), the computer asked for a reboot. I rebooted the PC to complete the
installation, and the computer appeared to be fine, bringing up the login
screen.

However, when I selected my name in the user list, and typed my password
to log in, the computer started the process, but then I got a "blue screen
of death". The error message mentions AVG (my virus scanner), which had also
been fine until then. Is there some kind of conflict between this windows
installer 3 update and avg? How can I fix this and get my computer to boot
properley? Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
ME

Hi

Could you please post the Stop Code from the BSOD? What happens if you

Martin,

If you find you can't login to normal mode of Windows, restart (reboot) and
get ready to tap & repeat tapping F8 function key, so that you can get the
advanced bootup options menu.
When the pc is booting up, there's a short section when the BIOS is doing
its self-test & other tasks.
Have your fingers ready at the F8. You want to start tapping just before it
shows
"Verifying DMI pool data".

Select Safe mode. See if you can login. Then use MSCONFIG & temp disable
your antivirus.

Suggestion: Add MS update sites to the IE browser Trusted sites list.
Internet Explorer > main menu /Tools/Internet Options >

Security Tab/ click on green icon Trusted Sites/click Sites button.

Look very closely at line that says:

"Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone" to
*clear* the selection.
(e.g. You want that to be un-checked (un-ticked)).

In the "Add this Web site to the zone:" field, add these entries to
list of "Trusted Sites" --

type
http://*.download.windowsupdate.com (click Add)

http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com

https://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com (with HTTPS)

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

Click OK. Apply changes to IE browser.

BTW, I'm running AVG7 on one of my pc's and there as no conflict with this
week's auto-update.

OK, will try this when I get home.

How will this help? - I can get updates, the problem is that the PC crashes
when the latest one is installed.

Thanks,
